Camp Barnwell Nightstand. c.1944. Collection of the South Carolina State Museum. Columbia, South Carolina.
This is a night table made by a German POW stationed at POW Camp Barnwell. Organized in early 1944, the camp housed around 200 prisoners near the end of the war and was deactivated late in 1945. The night table was given to the family of the local landowner, Carl Cheek, who provided the land for the POW camp. Cheek’s daughter gave it to the State Museum in 2003.
