Rationing during World War II

This 5th grade lesson helps students understand the shortages of food and other supplies during World War II.  Students use a Venn diagram to list the items needed by each soldier (food, water, medicine, ammunition).  This list helps students understand why certain items (such as sugar and gasoline) were rationed.  The teacher reads contemporary newspaper articles from the Greenville News (see “Rationing of Meat, Cheese, Butter, Oils to Begin 29th” March 13, 1943).  Students also worked with copies of actual ration coupons, and they learned about the different types of rationing that was in place.
