The Founders of Taylors and Greenville County

This 8th grade lesson has students read excerpts from Robert Mills’ Statistics of South Carolina (1826) to understand how Greenville developed in the late 1700s through the 1800s as a significant town in the upcountry of South Carolina.  Students also examine “An Act to Create Greenville” which is found in the South Carolina House Journal, 22 March 1786.  The original manuscript of the House Journal is found at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.  Students are assessed by their participation in class discussion and their ability to answer questions from their reading.
