Black Soldiers in the Revolutionary War
In 1775 Lord Dunmore, Royal Governor of Virginia, issued a proclamation which included a provision to free any indentured or enslaved persons who were willing to fight for the British against the rebellious colonists. This document can be used with 8th graders as an introduction to the role of African Americans who served both sides during the Revolutionary War. Students will read Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation and discuss the risks and benefits of joining the British. As an extension, students will research African Americans involved in the war and report their findings to the class
