The War of 1812

When studying the War of 1812 consider a lesson on the Star Spangled Banner. Begin by talking about Francis Scott Key and what the words meant to him, and then explore with the class how this poem came to be our National Anthem. You can also talk about what those words mean to your students today. This activity illustrates how an isolated event, like the battle of Baltimore, can come to have national significance that makes a lasting impression on more remote communities.
