The Status of Slavery: Establishing the Economic Value of Slaves

In The Status of Slavery: Establishing the Economic Value of Slaves students use slave bills of sale as an introduction to the economic side of slavery. In conjunction with a unit exploring the history of slavery in America this lesson addresses the reality that slaves were often thought of in terms of monetary value. Converting the price on bills of sale to modern currency becomes the starting point for a discussion about how people treat their expensive investments.
