A Comparison of Sparta and Athens at the Height of the Greek City-States to the South and the North Prior to the Civil War

Sixth grade students compare and contrast the societies of ancient Sparta and Athens with those of antebellum North and South, through a discussion of their geographic locations and written descriptions of their cultures.  Finally, students use a reproduction of Luther Terry’s 1858 painting An Allegory of the North and the South, part of the Greenville County Museum of Art’s collection, to inspire their own symbolic drawings of the Athens and Sparta.
