Slave Life in Antebellum South Carolina

Using a variety of documents illustrating life on a plantation, including records from the Beech Island Agricultural and Police Society at Clemson University’s Special Collections, this eighth grade lesson explores slave life in South Carolina.  Students learn about the life of slaves through slave narratives and the records of groups organized to regulate their freedoms.  Students complete the lesson by writing about what life as a South Carolina plantation slave would have been like.
