Slavery: Primary Source Documents

Eighth grade students use primary sources from the Louis DeSaussure Papers at the South Carolina Historical Society to learn about the impact of slavery on the local and state economies.  The students will examine the primary sources in groups, with each group looking at a document such as a life insurance policy for a slave, a slave sale advertisement, and/or a will or plantation diary listing the slaves on a plantation.  After filling out the Document Examination Form from the National Archives and presenting to the rest of the class, the students will discuss the impact of slavery in making the rice and cotton plantation profitable.
