Settling the Back Country

This lesson traces the reasons behind the establishment of townships in the early colonial backcountry of South Carolina, and relates the area to its place in trade and defense. This is done by analysis of the papers of Governor Johnson contained in the British Board of Trade papers held at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, as well as early maps of South Carolina from the South Caroliniana Library. Students are presented with historical background information, then asked to analyze documents written by Governor Johnson using a document analysis worksheet based on the format set forth by the National Archives. These documents are used to establish a narrative of settlement patterns.
