From Riches to Rags

After learning about the economic boom of the 1920s, the stock market crash of 1929, and the subsequent hardships faced by Americans in cities and on farms, fifth grade students will use a Venn diagram to compare conditions during the Great Depression, as seen in photographs from the time, to their lives today.  The students then will write letters describing how their lives would be affected if they had to face a similar experience.  Finally, students will write about the experience of people 1930s and early 1940s after hearing from a letter written to Eleanor Roosevelt by young Americans and other stories of children in the depression.
