Rice Culture in South Carolina: Carolina Gold

The lesson follows the story of Carolina Gold rice, from the introduction of the rice in Charleston by the captain of a Madagascan ship, through the widespread cultivation of rice throughout the state with slaves from the West Coast of Africa.  High school students learn about West African and South Carolina rice culture through the creation of a packet using websites, maps, photographs of plantations, readings on plantation life, and a visit to Caw Caw Interpretive Center, a site of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission.
