Our Country's National Parks

This 5th grade lesson has students creating brochures for individual parks in the National Park Service.  The teacher reads Teddy Roosevelt: Young Rough Rider to the students to learn about TR’s role in establishing National Parks.  Students learn about National Parks by examining letters of an influential director of the National Park Service under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.  George Hartzog, Jr., was born in Smoaks, South Carolina in 1920.  As director, Hartzog oversaw the additional of 5 new National Parks, with visitation to the parks more than doubling under his tenure.  Students learn more about how the National Park Service has grown by viewing a National Geographic Society video called Our National Parks.
