Native Americans: The Forgotten Minority

After learning about westward expansion, students explore the culture and history of the Catawba tribe in this high school lesson. Using political cartoons from local newspapers and photographs and letters from the Catawba Archives in Rock Hill, this lesson looks at relationship between the Catawba and the state of South Carolina, focusing on issues of land and culture throughout the twentieth century. The students finished their research of the tribe by compiling their own versions of a Native American Heritage newspaper.
