On the Move to Oregon

Fourth grade students first brainstorm using a KWL chart to discover previous knowledge and perceptions about westward expansion.  After learning about the history of westward expansion, specifically the development of Oregon through the Oregon Trail, students fill in missing information on a class poster and trace the route of the trail on maps.  Finally, they will use various personal narratives from cultural institutions relating life on the trail to create their own journal entries exploring the reasons for moving west and the hardships of the trail and life in Oregon.
