Map Skills

This lesson introduces students to map reading skills and the sources of information that may be drawn from maps. Through a lecture that employs examples of a series of historical maps from South Carolina (Mill's Atlas of 1825, 1883 map of Cornwallis' campaign in the Carolinas, 1840 map of united states territories, as well as modern maps), students are exposed to the ideas that maps are more than just images of political boundaries. Students are asked to analyze the maps during the lecture and to respond to questions about the information contained on the maps in class discussion. Additional analysis is performed in homework. Many of the maps in this lesson were obtained from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
