Jane Hunter

This lesson addresses the issue of segregation and early civil rights activities through the figure of Jane Hunter, a native of Pendleton, South Carolina who was instrumental in establishing housing and job training for African-American women in Ohio. Students are able to make connections between problems with housing and alcoholism in the past and present. Students are also asked to compare Hunter's life and work with other African-Americans of the period and with later civil rights figures. This lesson was developed with the assistance of the Pendleton District Commission, and employs newspaper clippings and other items from their files on Jane Hunter. Large sections of Hunter's book A Nickel and a Prayer were also used.
