Teacher Lesson Ideas
The Gullah Language and Its Contribution to South Carolina
Slaves would tell stories to entertain and teach their children. Morals, lessons, and values were taught through these stories. They were often told in the Gullah language and not written down because slaves were not allowed to read or write. As a class students listen to the Gullah tales, translate the story, and interpret the lesson.
