Gregg at Graniteville: Industrialization

The importance of textile mills in the history of South Carolina is highlighted in this high school lesson.  William Gregg’s Graniteville, was the first textile mill in the state and students learn about the mill by reading a primary source excerpt from the March 23, 1848 edition of the Charleston Mercury in the collection of South Caroliniana Library.  Students then explore what has happened to textile mills across the state.  Students will do independent research on textile mills and present their findings to the class.
