Teacher Lesson Ideas

Go, Go Gullah!

This lesson, and it's counterpart, "Great Gullah Gumbo," both seek to teach students about the Gullah culture in South Carolina. In these lessons, students will learn the history and traditions of the Gullah people through their own unique dialect. Students are also encouraged to travel to Charleston to see the women who hand-make sweet grass baskets, and to tour areas where the Gullah people lived. At the end of the lesson, students should understand the history of the Gullah culture and its influence on the lives of Colonial and Antebellum South Carolinians.
