Exploration and Settlement
Share with your students the history of the exploration and settlement of America! Try creating an “Explorers Timeline” with your students, plotting the voyages to the New World. Look at Martin Behaim’s Globe, which illustrates 15th century historical actors’ understanding of world geography. Behaim’s Globe contains historical notes. Look at John White watercolors and De Bry engravings to see European colonists’ perceptions of Native Americans. After studying early settlement have your students create colonial journals of their imagined New World experiences. Learning about the motivations, successes, and failures of early explorers and settlers provides terrific historic background for the study of South Carolina and the United States. (See John White watercolors and De Bry engravings).
