Understanding Equality in South Carolina

Fifth grade students see the story of desegregation in South Carolina unfold in this lesson. Using the Briggs v. Elliott petition from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and papers from the Strom Thurmond collection in Special Collections at Clemson Library, students see documents that paved the way for equality and that set up obstacles to desegregation. Students write about how they would have felt to go to a segregated school for their assessment activity.
