Equality Before the Law

Segregation in South Carolina is explored in this high school government lesson.  After learning about the legal history of segregated schools, students examine the Briggs v Elliot case, along with the resulting Brown v Board of Education ruling, to understand how the Equal Protection Clause applies to segregated education.  Finally, students use self-conducted interviews about segregated schools, in conjunction with local news articles, to create a booklet describing the integration of schools in their area.
