Did the US Constitution Contribute to the Secession of South Carolina and the Civil War?

The concept of history affecting the future is introduced in Did the US Constitution Contribute to the Secession of South Carolina and the Civil War? This lesson looks at the compromises made by a fledgling nation that later had to be resolved, in the case of state's rights and slavery, with the Civil War. Students will read the Ordinance of Secession and the United States Constitution to discover what South Carolinians were rebelling against. Then have students rewrite the Constitution, or sections of it, to eliminate the tensions that caused the Civil War.
