Teacher Lesson Ideas

The development of Columbia, South Carolina mirrors the development of many other cities that were founded in the early national period. In this unit of lessons, students learn about the development of Columbia through analyzing maps, census information, and historic structures. Through this analysis students gain an understanding for the people who have lived in Columbia's past and their way of life. Students then break into teams to create a model of developing Columbia over time. They select important structures to include in the model, justify their choices, and provide details of architecture, furnishings, and the inhabitants. This lesson was developed in partnership with Historic Columbia. Historic Columbia provided copies of early settlement maps, Sanborn maps, and images of Columbia. In addition, a tour of Historic Columbia's historic structures was arranged.
