January 28, 1963 - The Peaceful Integration of Clemson College by Harvey Gantt

This high school lesson explores school integration in South Carolina, after a broader lesson on the Civil Rights Movement throughout the South. Using a variety of primary sources from Clemson University, including university records, court cases, letters, and newspaper articles, the story of Harvey Gantt's integration of the school is placed into a local and national context. Throughout the lesson, students learn how to interpret the primary sources and analyze the events during the integration of Clemson to better understand South Carolina's unique path to end racial segregation of public schools.
