Civil War Letters Home

The Civil War was a defining moment in American history. Although the events may seem distant, they impacted real individuals on a personal level. Through lecture, students will be introduced to the events leading to the war and the course of the war. Students will have an opportunity to respond to the content in class discussion about the causes and events concerning the war. By reading a series of letters written by Confederate soldiers from Georgia and South Carolina, students will be able to see how the war impacted individuals over time. Students will then be asked to place themselves in the context of the war and respond to one of these letters in a message of their own. The Confederate Relic Room provided some of the letters employed in this lesson.
