John C. Calhoun

This unit of lesson employs images, letters, and speeches of John C. Calhoun from the collections at Fort Hill at Clemson University to construct the character and motivations of John C. Calhoun. Students will analyze the documents' content to gain insight into Calhoun's personality. By developing an understanding of one of the great figures of the nineteenth century, students will develop an understanding of the major issues of the time, particularly those of developing sectional tensions.
