The Boston What?

Fourth grade students learn about propaganda and differing perspectives in this lesson on the Boston Massacre.  After listening to an account of the Boston Massacre, students create their own images depicting the skirmish between American colonists and British soldiers that occurred on March 5, 1770.  The teacher then uses Paul Revere’s engraving of the massacre and additional images that depict the event from the British perspective to spark group discussions of why Paul Revere portrayed events as he did.  Students draw from eyewitness accounts, along with the images, to debate the events.  Finally, the students write their own account of the Boston Massacre from the perspective an American colonist or a British soldier.
