The Battle of Camden

South Carolina played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Several important battles were fought in the state, which contributed to eventual victory at Yorktown. This lesson introduces students to the period of early fighting in South Carolina after the British capture of Charleston and the patriot defeat at Camden. By examining the battle of Camden, students gain insight into the personalities involved, the tactics used by the armies, and the life and equipment of soldiers at the time. Content is conveyed through lecture, images of Historic Camden and events at the location, and a journal extract from a participant in the battle. This lesson was developed with the assistance of Historic Camden, which provided background information, images, and the Collins journal.
