Highlights from the Midlands Summer Institute, June 2004

Teachers participating in the Midlands Summer Institute worked with staff from a variety of cultural institutions. During the 10-day institute, class took place at Kensington Mansion, Historic Columbia, the State Archives, the South Caroliniana Library, the SC State Museum, and the Columbia Museum of Art. In this picture, teachers hop aboard a trolley for a tour of mills and mill villages in Columbia. Lisa Randle of Historic Columbia led this trolley tour.

Teachers spent two days at the South Caroliniana Library. Class took place in the Kendall Room at Caroliniana. After lunch, the group was set free to do research for their lesson projects. Staff at Caroliniana pulled records and gave advice on doing research with primary sources. In this picture, teachers learn about some of the historic maps available at the Caroliniana.

Teachers also worked together doing hands-on activities and discussing pedagogical issues. Marshall Angle and Kim Breen look puzzled as they take part in this master teacher session at the South Carolina State Museum.

The Midlands Summer Institute concluded at the Columbia Museum of Art. In this picture, Joelle Ryan-Cook provides a gallery tour. This tour inspired discussions and ideas on how educators can use art to teach history.
