Official Announcement made for New TAH Grant, August 2004

On Thursday, August 19, Congressman Joe Wilson and Dr. Anne Hancock of the U.S. Department of Education spoke to the press at the South Carolina Archives and History Center to announce the awarding of the new Teaching American History grant. Dr. Rodger Stroup, director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History welcomed the group and gave a brief history of the grant project.

Dr. Stroup introduced Dr. Stephen Hefner, superintendent of Richland School District 2. Dr. Hefner spoke of the importance of providing support to history teachers and building partnerships with local cultural institutions. Congressman Wilson and Dr. Hancock both spoke about the Teaching American History program and how it is improving history education across the country. Dr. Hancock then presented a check for $999,558 to Richland School District 2.

After the press conference, everyone was invited to a guided tour of the archives and a reception of tea and doughnuts. After filling up on all the goodies, everyone took turns taking pictures holding the big check.
