"Innovative Lessons" from AASLH

In September of 2005, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) hosted its annual meeting in Pittsburgh, PA.  The theme for this year’s conference, “History’s Mysteries,” gave TAHSC the opportunity to reveal what we have learned about reaching out to educators to representatives from cultural institutions across the nation.

TAHSC Assistant Project Director Katie Johnson, two-year summer institute participant Kib Hunt, and the director of Drayton Hall and cultural institution partner, George McDaniel, all presented at a roundtable discussion entitled “Innovative Lessons from Teaching American History.”  Eachspeaker represented a different viewpoint on how cultural institutions and educators can work together and how primary resources can be made available for classroom use.  The PowerPoint presented at the meeting is available by clicking on the image to the left (it may take a few minutes to load).

From discovering a wealth primary sources available on the web through the Virginia Center for Digital History, to learning about Ohio's History Works TAH grant, and finding out about creative student projects at the History Center in Tomkins County (NY) the conference offered a chance to explore new and exciting educational resources. Attending the conference provided an excellent opportunity to connect with colleagues and generate new ideas for the upcoming 2006 institutes!
