Midyear Teachers' Retreat at Hickory Knob, February 2004

Participating teachers of the 2003 Summer Institutes came from all parts of the state for a retreat at Hickory Knob State Resort Park. Here Larry Nelson, master scholar for the summer institutes, offers a few words about Thomas Jefferson's views on education.

During the morning session of the retreat, participants met in small groups to discuss their lessons created for the TAH project. Here Cynthia Jonas of York County tells everyone about her group's experience and how the TAH project affected their teaching.

Pictured here are Joel Walker of the State Archives and teacher Rebecca Voigt of Chesterfield discussing some of the challenges involved in teaching American history in South Carolina.

During the afternoon session of the retreat, participants met in their regional groups. Here, Fritz Hamer of the South Carolina State Museum leads a discussion with Midlands participants about partnerships among teachers and cultural institutions.
