Thanks for the Memories . . .
Congratulations to the 52 teachers who participated in the 2006 Teaching American History Summer Institutes! Each two-week Institute was comprised of a survey in American history since 1865, time spent with cultural institutions, and a session on teaching methods. Many thanks to the institutions who hosted us this year, as well as our Master Scholar Paul Anderson, and Master Teachers Tim Hicks, Mike Kreft, Allyson Goff, Kim Harrelson, Marc Turner and Wardie Sanders. And of course, none of this would have been possible without South Carolina’s finest teachers.
Though the days were bursting with things to do, places to see, and history to learn, participants always managed to have fun. Nearly every day was spent touring a museum, searching through an archive, or listening to reenactors bring to life historical figures such as FDR, James F. Byrnes, and "Pitchfork" Ben Tillman. For the TAHSC staff, it was exciting to see the participants bond during each Institute.
During the fall and winter of 2006-2007, participants will work with TAHSC Graduate Assistants to develop lesson plans that will utilize primary source documents and cultural institutions. These new lesson plans will help students appreciate South Carolina’s unique and fascinating history. In February 2007 all 52 teachers will come back together to share ideas and discuss their own personal growth.
