History well told is beautiful…Stories well done are
stories that
reveal how people and societies have actually
functioned, and they prompt thoughts about the human
experience in other
times and places.

From Peter Stearns, “Why Study History,”
American Historical Association, 1998.

The quote above from Peter Stearns should remind us that the study of history helps us all become more connected with the human experience, both past and present.  In order to make these connections with our students, we must constantly discover engaging stories from the past and effectively deliver them to our students.  We must also remember that the best history classes resemble laboratories, as students investigate the past by drawing their own conclusions based on evidence.

With these ideas in mind, this first annual “History Educator’s Forum” is inviting history and social studies teachers of all grade levels from across the state to join us for a daylong content-rich professional development opportunity that explores the theme of Conflict and Compromise in History.

An eclectic group of historians, educators, and administrators are leading content sessions, panel discussions, and workshops around a variety of topics relating to history and history education. The Education Staff at the SC Department of Archives & History is coordinating this event, in partnership with National History Day in South Carolina and Teaching American History in South Carolina, with support from National Council for History Education.
